He was among the first few farmers to take up vermiculture and organic farming methods in Gulbarga district. The farmer we are referring to is Shamrao Patil, from Garur village in Gulbarga taluk.

Patil has won the Krishi Pandit award for his work. He has grown mango, lime, papaya, drumstick, brinjal, chilli, tomato, maize, sunflower etc all using organic farming methods. He is an expert in mixed cropping. What’s more, Patil  makes the manure for his crops himself. He also sells vermi-compost. This illiterate farmer without any basic schooling is now a resource person for agricultural activities.
