Life beyond screen

She has been winning critics over with her acting skills. Kirti Kulhari has made a mark in the industry with her sensitive performances. In fact, her role as Falak in ‘Pink’ had made quite an impact and received much appreciation.

As she braces up for a new avatar in Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Indu Sarkar’, she took time off to speak to Anila Kurian about it.

Tell us about ‘Indu Sarkar’.
It’s a film set during the Emergency period and I am playing a poet with a speech disability. Indu Sarkar, my character, goes through tough situations in life and the movie is about she finding her voice.

How did you prepare for the role?
I had to meet a speech therapist to perfect my stammering. I didn’t know there were different types of it! I also met a psychologist who helped me understand what a child who grew up with mental trauma would be like.

You’re also doing a film with Irrfan Khan...
Yes, it’s called ‘Raita’. It’s a quirky comedy and very different from ‘Indu Sarkar’. I can’t say anything more than this for now.

Your proudest character so far...
It has to be Falak from‘Pink’. The film and the character are very special to me. I also enjoyed playing Indu Sarkar. It’s hard to choose between them.

Do you get time to watch movies?
I honestly don’t get the time. But I do watch a lot of movies. I recently watched ‘Noor’, ‘Phillauri’, ‘The Zookeeper's Wife’ and ‘Out of Africa’.

What’s your comfort food?
The simple homemade ‘dal chawal’ is my favourite. I recently learnt how to make ‘Dahi poha’. I’m currently following an ayurvedic diet which requires me to cook. I’ve found those recipes to be satisfying as well.

Something you’re terrible at.
Technology!

How bad are you at technology?
Oh, gosh! I recently learnt that you can share a Facebook post and on WhatsApp, there’s a way to send contacts without having to copy and paste it.

Do you enjoy travelling?
Yes! Usually after a project, if time allows, my husband and I plan a vacation.

Where did you go last?
I was in Europe for a 25-day trip. The best part of it was enjoying the beautiful scenery and a croissant and coffee every morning. Wish we had that concept in India!

Do you have any hidden talents?
I rediscovered my love for cooking. I used to be a moody cook but now that I am on the ayurvedic diet, I’ve realised that cooking is not that hard to do and I enjoy every moment of it.
