Once dubbed as the heaviest women, Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, on Thursday, left India – with lots of love, over 50 percent weight loss and a very special gift – a green corridor to transport her from the Saifee Hospital at Charni Road to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
Eman will now be treated further at VPS Healthcare in Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates. Eman (37) weighed around 500 kilos and dubbed as the ‘world’s heaviest woman’ underwent bariatric surgery on March 7 after losing an initial 100 kilos through a strict protein-rich liquid diet. On February 11, she was airlifted in a special cargo plane from the port town of Alexaderia in Egypt.
After nearly 83 days of treatment under Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, Chairman, Institute of Minimal Access Surgical Sciences & Research Centre, Saifee Hospital, she now weighs around 171 kgs. “We are thankful to the people of India, we are thankful to the doctors who treated Eman…I respect all the countrymen here and the doctors who treated her,” said Shaaima Selim, her sister, in her brief comments.
A few days ago, she accused the doctor of being a “lair" and posted videos and photos of the patient in her Facebook page and raised doubt over the progress of her health. However, the hospital administration has accused her of not taking the responsibility and going back. “It seems she (Selim) is not prepared to go back. And that fright that has led her to make all these allegations,” Saifee Hospital COO Huzaifa Sehabi had said.
Ahead of her discharge from hospital which was delayed because of technical issues, Maharashtra health minister Dr Deepak Sawant also visited the patient and spoke to the doctors. “Complete body profile showed Eman’s parameters are normal. Eman’s sister Shaimaa thanked Saifee Hospital,” he said.
Reports said that VPS Burjeel Hospital representatives refused to sign certain documents given by Saifee Hospital, however, Dr Sawant reached there and resolved the issue. “At #SaifeeHospital to resolve documentation issue of #EmanAhmed ji,” he tweeted. BJP leader Shaina NC, who took was at the hospital tweeted: “Quashing the rumour mills; #EmanAhmed is perfectly fine in health & authorities helping her with final paper work,@DrMuffi - Grt work by you.
Once the formalities were done, Eman was wheeled out of the hospital amidst clicks of cameras. Several hospital staff came to bade goodbye to her even as there was crowd on the road to have a glimpse of what was happening. The Mumbai police created a green corridor for her ambulance to move fast and unhindered from the hospital to the airport.
