World's first animal terminal

Last Updated 04 May 2017, 18:28 IST

The world’s first privately owned 24-hour animal terminal has opened at the John F Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York.

The first phase of The Ark – as the terminal is called – features a pet oasis, an equine and livestock export centre, and aviary in-transit quarantine.

The 178,000 square foot $65 million facility, located at Cargo Building 78 provides services in the air as well as on land, and will eventually also feature animal kenneling, boarding and veterinary and diagnostic services. Two more phases, expected to be implemented later this year, will offer additional services.

In the first phase, while the equine and livestock export centre deals with
horses and other livestock making their way through JFK Airport, the pet oasis is intended as more of an all-purpose animal wellness centre.

The second phase will include a grooming area and a full import/export centre for horses. The third and final phase will offer a full veterinary clinic, a veterinary blood laboratory, and pet boarding and grooming facility.

When it is fully up and running, The Ark will serve as a stopover for animals providing services of various kinds for cats and dogs.
