In a bizarre incident, a wedding was cancelled in a village in Uttar Pradesh following a dispute over ‘rasgulla’.
According to reports, the incident occurred at Karmapur village in Unnao district, about 60 km from here, on Thursday.

Reports said that Shiv Kumar, a resident of Khuntaha village in the same district, was to marry Ranjita (names changed) of Karmapur village.

Soon after the wedding party arrived, the bride’s family asked them to have refreshments before joining the rituals. The trouble began when one of the guests picked up two rasgullas from the pot instead of one. A member of the bride’s family, who was in charge of the sweet stalls, said that only one rasgulla was allowed per guest.
The guest took serious objection to this and the two got  into a heated argument.

They were joined by others and soon a fist fight broke out. Reports said a free-for-all ensued at the venue. The guests attacked the host with plates and also destroyed food items.
The police were called in to control the situation. A panchayat was held, after peace was established, to deliberate on the issue. It asked the two families to go ahead with the wedding and complete the rituals.
However, the bride, who was told about the incident by one of her friends, refused to marry into a family of “hooligans”.

All attempts to persuade the bride to agree to the wedding by her family failed. The wedding party had to return without the bride.

A complaint was later lodged with the police by the bride’s father. He said in the complaint that heavy losses were incurred due to the behaviour of the guests.
