Last Updated 05 June 2017, 19:09 IST

A group of activists, academicians and students union leaders are bracing up to launch a movement against rising cases of lynching by mobs in different parts of the country.

Rolling out a national campaign against mob lynching here on Monday, they demanded the Centre come up with a new law to bring the culprits of such violence to justice, as the current provisions under the IPC were inadequate to deal with such cases.

They set up a committee of civil society members, which included senior Supreme Court lawyer Sanjay Hegde, social activists, artists and academicians, to draft an anti-mob lynching legislation.

The group also comprised Gujarat Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani and Kanhaiya Kumar and Shehla Rashid, former president and vice president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU).
