Farmers aghast after receiving Re 1 relief for crop loss

The farmers in the district are in distress due to prolonged dry spells and their hopes of getting some relief from the government have shattered. The Revenue department has deposited Re 1 into the account of many farmers in the taluk towards crop loss compensation.

Puttamma of Yagachi village owns 3.1 acres of land, and ragi and jowar cultivated on 2.10 acres was lost due to drought. She had applied for compensation but the Revenue department has now deposited Re 1 into her bank account at SBI, Belakavadi branch.

Similarly, Manjunath of Kananakoppal has received Re 1 as compensation. He lost jowar which was cultivated on 2.34 acres of land. Manjunath received Re 1 in his account of Vijaya Bank branch on June 6.

The bank manager said that three farmers have received Re 1 as compensation for crop loss so far. Belakavadi Taluk Panchayat member Ningegowda condemned the government saying that it is belittling the farmers. Raitha Sangha taluk president Yoganna threatened to hold a protest against the government if the officials failed to rectify the problem.

Tahsildar H V Prasannamurthy said that as many as 30,000 farmers have applied for compensation. “I have received information that a few farmers have received Re 1 as compensation. However, the number of farmers who have received Re 1 as relief is yet to be ascertained. I have directed the panchayat development officers to collect the details,” he said. At least 1,476 farmers have not linked their Aadhaar numbers with their bank accounts and thus the compensation amount has not been deposited, he said.
