NSG to discuss India's entry

The Nuclear Suppliers Group is likely to discuss India’s plea for admission into the cartel during its plenary at Berne in Switzerland, but New Delhi is not expecting a breakthrough.

Despite Russia’s latest bid to make China stop opposing India’s entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group, New Delhi is not expecting that the cartel’s forthcoming plenary would end the impasse over its plea for membership.

Russian President Vladimir Putin took up with Chinese President Xi Jinping the issue of India’s admission into the Nuclear Suppliers Group when the two leaders met in Astana on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's summit last week. He argued that China should reconsider its position and support India's immediate entry, sources told DH. The renewed attempt by Modi and Putin to nudge Xi came just ahead of the NSG’s annual plenary, which would take place at Berne in Switzerland next week.
