Petitioners told the Supreme Court on Friday that Aadhaar results in exclusion not only through the process of enrolment, but also by its use, often referred to as authentication.

This, the petitions state, would deny the benefits and result in violation of right to life guaranteed under the Constitution.

In an affidavit, former National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson and Magsaysay winner Shanta Sinha and Kalyani Menon Sen countered the government’s claims of saving Rs 49,560 crore from the direct benefit transfer scheme in 2014-15 and 2015-16 through the use of Aadhaar as “incorrect and a gross exaggeration”.
