<p> The monthly theatre was started on the January 6, 2002 and since then has performed on all the first Sundays of every month.<br /><br />Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Anuradha Paudwal was all praise for Maandd Sobhann and its Gurkaar Eric Ozario. <br /><br />“We are indebted to you for putting Konkani on world map to preserve and promote Konkani culture and tradition,” she said and added that she was proud to be a Konkani. <br />Terming the event as ‘pride of Konkani,’ she said “let the 100 (monthly theatre) go on to become a million.”<br /><br />On the occasion, 100 ‘rockets’ (crackers) were fired to mark the event.<br />Giving a brief detail about the 100 theatre programmes, Maandd Sobhann Gurkar Eric Ozario said that over 2,000 artistes have performed in the programmes while over 50,000 people have witnessed the events.<br /><br /> “Though the organisation spent about Rs 30 lakh for the 100 programmes, it could collect only Rs 9 lakh,” he said and added that the programme will continue, come what may. <br /><br />During the event, Anuradha Paudwal released a book ‘History of Konkani songs among Mangalorean Catholics, health and future,’ researched and written by Neeta Rebello, which was followed by a tribute to Konkani singing legend Wilfy Rebimbus, by poet Melwyn Rodrigues.<br /><br />The celebrations included the best of 15 Konkani songs between 1900 and 2010. The Maandd Sobhann had organised a contest wherein the public were asked to list 15 most popular Konkani songs in the last 110 years. <br /><br />Interestingly, none gave the right answer. Hence, the Rs 10,000 prize money was retained by the organisers.<br />Nine persons were feted on the occasion for attending most number of monthly theatres in Kalaangann. <br /><br />The three hour-long programme also included popular Konkani folk dances by Mandd Sobhann artistes.<br />DH News Service</p>
