Hypertension has become one of the most common lifestyle disorders that we come across today. According to Coronary Artery Disease Index in Asian Indians, the number of people suffering from hypertension is projected to increase from 118 million in 2000 to 214 million in 2025, with the ailment affecting both men and women.

If hypertension is not addressed at an early stage, it can lead to complications such as stroke, kidney failure or even premature death. Here are five ways to steer clear of hypertension:

Staying healthy and fit will cut down on your chances of getting hypertension. Work out for at least 30 minutes a day, since exercise helps the heart use oxygen more efficiently.

Going on a low sodium diet will help control blood pressure. Avoid adding extra salt to your meals. Use salt shakers to add salt to your food as they can control the quantity.

Ginger is rich in properties that control blood pressure, improve blood circulation and relax the muscles surrounding the blood vessels. Add a generous dash of ginger to tea, soups, curries etc.

Ayurvedic texts and modern research support the fact that garlic, has the ability to lower cholesterol and control blood pressure. It also prevents hardening of blood vessels. Consume garlic at least once a day in the form of a raw clove or as an ingredient in your food.

A few pieces of dark chocolate every day can help control blood pressure without adding too many calories.

Adopt a healthy lifestyle, consume balanced meals, take appropriate health supplements and fight the first signs of hypertension.
