Don't run behind scores alone: Lobo

'Lay emphasis on quality education'

Schools should do away with the tendency to run behind the examination scores, Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo said. He was speaking after inaugurating an educational meeting organised by Dakshina Kannada High School Headmasters and PU College Headmasters’ Association (DKHMPA) at S M Kushe College in Attavar on Tuesday.

The MLA said marks are not everything. Emphasis should be laid on quality education, he added. Mangaluru is considered as an education hub. The acts which dent the image of the district should be stopped to create a better learning environment, he stated.

Lobo said that the issue of delay in salaries of teachers should be dealt with seriously.The grants for schools under Mangaluru City Corporation are not released on time.  A discussion on such administrative issues is needed to find a solution, he felt.

Delivering the keynote address, Mangalore University English Department’s Prof Ravishankar said that parental pressure to score high marks affects the children. Teachers should respond to psychological behaviour of students. Silent classrooms may not create good students, he observed.

He said health education should be taught in schools. MLC and Opposition Whip in Legislative Council Capt Ganesh Karnik, Dakshina Kannada High School Headmasters and PU College Headmasters’ Association (DKHMPA) president Dr Ismail N, secretary Usha H Ballal, KSRTC director Sudhir T K, DDPI Y Shivaramaiah, Mangaluru South Block Education Officer Jnanesh and S M Kushe Institution head K K Upadhyaya were present.
