NIA to question Geelani's elder son

Move is part of probe into terror funding

Take forward its probe into the terror funding case in Kashmir, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday issued summons to hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani's elder son Nayeem to appear before it for questioning on Monday.

Nayeem, a surgeon who is tipped to be the successor to Geelani in Tehrek-e-Hurriyat, would be questioned on the funding of stone pelters, sources said.

The NIA has arrested seven persons, including Geelani's son-in-law Altaf Ahmed Shah, in connection with the case and are in NIA custody.

The arrests came after scrutiny of mobile and internet activities of around 50 Kashmiri youth, who were repeatedly spotted at stone pelting protests.

The NIA had been monitoring the mobile phone records of these youth for past two months and it came to light that they were monetarily fed by local leaders linked to the Hurriyat.

The middle-level Hurriyat leaders operated through these local leaders to reach the youths, who were given funds to organise stone-pelting protests after suspected Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani's encounter killing in July last year.
