They made Changappa consume cool drinks laced with sleeping pills, after lunch. After Changappa fell asleep, they strangled him to death. Later, they covered the body in a plastic sheet and disposed it into Hemavathi backwaters. After reaching Bengaluru, they called up Changappa’s wife, using the deceased’s phone, informing that her husband had already left for Hassan, leaving his mobile phone behind, the SP added.

When Changappa did not return home even after a week, his son Manoj Kumar lodged a complaint with the police on July 27. The police, initially filed a missing complaint. Changappa’s body was found near a temple under Alur police station limits after a few days. The body was identified was handed over to the family members, he said.

The police, who probed the issue, found that it was a murder for gain by Vasanth and his friends. The amount was seized from Vasanth Kumar’s house. More details will be available after a probe, the SP added.
