While some of the top contenders such as defending champion Ashok Kumar, Gaurav Ghei and Shamim Khan advanced to the second round, other big names such as Rahul Ganapathy, Arjun Singh and Vivek Bhandari made early exits.
Amritinder Singh of Chandigarh caused another upset when he defeated 2009 runner-up Ganapathy on the 20th hole (second play-off hole) in one of the closest matches.
The 25-year-old Shaurya of Army Golf Course defeated veteran Mukesh of Mhow 2-up to cause a major upset for the third straight year. In 2009, Shaurya had beaten Mohd Siddikur Rahman and the year before that, he had ousted Harmeet Kahlon.
