The famous Badami caves were  among the many heritage structures that came alive through the paintings by young artists in the making at the Deccan Herald in Education’s (DHiE) inter-school painting competition held on Thursday.

The theme for the juniors was Bengaluru - the city and Independence Day, while the seniors had to paint heritage structures in Karnataka and a comparison between village and city lives.

Children as young as six years took to their paints and brushes to show their love for the city they call home. Their paintings also reflected their concern for the growing problems of the city like increasing pollution and decreasing green cover. Time stood still as memories of yesteryear Bengaluru with its lovely climate and beautiful green canopies were revived in the paintings.

The students brought out the best of their creativity by using mediums like glass, acrylic, glitters and oil to create their masterpieces. Each painting was a poetry in colour.

One of the paintings that stood out portrayed the village in orange colour that reflected vibrancy of life, a characteristic of the rising sun, while the city was painted in black, reflecting the increasing pollution that is killing the green cover of the city. Another painting played with light and shade effects to give life to the city’s heritage structures.

“The students’ talent has taken me by absolute surprise. Their understanding and implementation of different mediums is incredible. Also, the passion and love for the city which are reflected in their paintings are inspiring. It was incredibly tough to choose the best painting as each of them was a masterpiece in its own right,” said Raveena Nair, judge and a final year student at Chitrakala Parishath. Over 550 students and 130 schools participated in the event.
