Thai champ overcomes financial woes in style

After pocketing a cool $54,000 with his triumph at the TAKE Solutions Masters on Sunday, Poom Saksansin revealed that his foray into golf wasn't the easiest in terms of finances.

His father worked with a telecom network provider and tournament entry fee was usually a stumbling block for Saksansin.

“I don't come from a family that had a lot of wealth. My father is now retired and I remember, earlier, my mother used to keep an account of how much she spent on my tournament fee.

“A few years down the line, once it reached one million Baht she stopped keeping track. I think she was fed up,” he said with a chuckle.

Asked what he would do with his tournament winnings, the Thai thought for a moment and replied: “I will definitely give it to my mother.”

Good friends

The Thai golfer who plays at the Pine course in Bangkok, is close friends with the man he edged out on Sunday – Khalin Joshi.

Asked whether beating the Bengaluru-based golfer would change the equation, he brushed aside the suggestion.

“We will still be good friends. Even today, we spoke through the round.

“We may compete during the game but we are still good friends off the course,” the Thai said.
