Hotels likely to hike tea, coffee rates

Last Updated 08 April 2010, 18:46 IST

The sudden and steep hike in the milk price has taken everyone by surprise.

The hike is all set to push up the prices of tea and coffee to delicacies such as pedas and halwas too.

Milk being a base product, the prices of other related commodities are likely to be affected. The manager of Arya sweets, Somendra Gupta said the milk price hike will increase the rate of sweets by 15 to 20 percent.

Imran, Manager, Squeeze More Out of Life, believed that milk being a basic product, its price should have been left alone. “Milk is a major nourishing product for children, and they are the ones who will be affected the most,” he said.

The consumers are not as much baffled at the price hike as to the extent of the hike. They feel the people could have taken a 50 paise rise or a one rupee hike. A manager at the Hotel Shelton Grand said the hike is too huge for the common man to handle and the prices of some of the milk based commodities in his hotel will definitely be hiked.
But, Neelesh, a city dweller, however, feels the Government has done the right thing as this is a trend seen in other states. However he said, “The hike is too much and would lead to a sorry state of affairs for the lower and lower middle classes.”
