3G auction to kick off today

The 3G telecom services will allow mobile phone subscribers to have faster connectivity than what is available and enable applications such as Internet TV, video-on-demand and high-speed data exchange.

The state-run telecom companies, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) have already rolled out 3G services as the government had already allotted the spectrum to them on priority basis.

As many as nine telecom companies including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Aircel, Etisalat, S Tel and Videocon Telecommunications will take part in the auction which will be held from 9 am to 7:30 pm on all days upto three weeks, except Sundays and national holidays.

The government expects the auction process to complete smoothly and transparently. During the mock auction conducted two days ago, companies expressed their satisfaction over the prevailing system.

According to the Notice Inviting Applications, of the 22 telecom circles, five states including Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh and J&K will have four private players for the auction. Other circles, including the four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, will have three private players.
