In a joint operation by Chennai and Kochi zone units, officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested two businessmen and seized 16.95 kg of gold worth Rs 5 crore, which was smuggled from Dubai.

According to sources, the accused, identified as John Williams and Chandrashekar, were arrested on September 15, when they landed from Dubai.

Sources in the DRI said that for sometime now, they had been tracking the movement of the accused. The DRI officials followed the duo on the same flight from Dubai to Bengaluru to check if some customs officials in the KIA were colluding with the businessmen. The accused were produced before the magistrate and taken into custody for interrogation. DRI officials are also questioning two customs officials for their alleged involvement in the racket.
