Indian Super League employs away goal format

Last Updated 06 March 2018, 19:25 IST

The Indian Super League will, for the first time,  introduce the 'away-goal' format when the semifinals of the fourth edition kick-off in Pune on Wednesday.

In the previous years, if the semifinals ended in a draw after two legs, extra-time and penalties were the methods prescribed to break the deadlock.

Major leagues across the world employ the away-goal method and the ISL has joined the bandwagon, though using a slightly modified version.

So if the teams are level after the second leg, the team that has scored more away goals will end up as the winner.

UEFA and other international bodies employ a version wherein an away goal will make the difference regardless of when it is scored. However, a visiting team netting during extra time of the ISL semifinal will not benefit from the rule.

For example: If both teams have scored an equal number of home and away goals, the game will go into an extra period and during this time, the team that scores more goals will progress. If they cannot be separated, the winner will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
