Now, WR's Matunga Road to be all-ladies staff station

After Central Railway's Matunga station, Western Railway's Matunga Road station is all set to become an all-women staff suburban station in Mumbai.

At a formal event on the International Women's Day on Thursday the Matunga Road railway station of Western Railway (WR), the second all-woman staff station of Mumbai's suburban network, will start functioning.

In July, 2017, the Matunga railway station of Central Railway (CR), became India's first all-woman staff railway station and in January, 2018, it entered the Limca Book of Records.

The WR has posted a total of 31 women personnel as frontline staff from commercial, operating and security department.

The Commercial department has deployed 13 commercial clerks and 3 Ticket checking staff to undertake commercial activities whereas 11 Operating staff (Station Master and Points person) and 4 Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel have been deployed at Matunga Road Station.

"WR's Matunga Road Station to be run by all women staff from #internationalwomensday2018 . It will be operated by 31 women employees ie there will be lady Station Supdt, Booking Clerks, Pointspersons & Security personnels," the WR tweeted.

As far as CR's Matunga station is concerned, a total of 41 women staffers, including 17 booking clerks, 6 RPF personnel, 8 ticket checkers, 5 point persons, 2 announcers and 2 safai karmacharis are working under the supervision of station manager Mamta Kulkarni.

Incidentally, Mamta Kulkarni is first Assistant Station Master to be recruited on Mumbai Division of Central Railway in 1992.

The Matunga area of Mumbai is one of the most important places are concerned as far as the history and heritage of this commercial capital is concerned.

Matunga was among the first well planned localities of Mumbai. The Dadar-Matunga-Wadala-Sion plan of 1899-1900 was formulated to evenly distribute population as well as provide better living standards.

There are several Irani cafes and Udupi food joints here. Several big educational institutes are located here.

As far as CR's Matunga station is concerned, it is one of the oldest suburban stations of the country.

As regards, WR's Matunga Road, this too is one of the oldest halts of the sub urban network. It may be recalled during the 11 July, 2006 serial blasts in suburban trains, one of the blasts took place in Matunga Road.
