Come summer, the temperatures soar and so do the electricity bills. Fans, coolers and air conditioners (AC) consume a huge amount of energy and require regular maintenance. Here are a few pointers to help you save energy, cut down on those bills and ensure efficient use of your cooling appliances.

Portable units: To begin with, If you haven't invested in an AC yet, go for a portable one. You can simply place them in the room you're using and these use up to 50% less energy compared to a central one.
Sleep mode: Use this setting at night as it gradually increases the temperature while you're asleep, thereby saving energy.
Regular servicing: Allergens and dust are common in summer, and these can clog the filters of the AC. Cleaning them every two weeks and servicing the AC at least thrice a year is important for its long-term health.
Obstructions: Ensure that furniture or plants are not blocking the vent. Also, avoid placing electricals near the AC as they generate heat and can affect the temperature.
Air leaks: Make sure that there are no openings in your doors and windows, as the cool air can escape through these gaps and makes one feel like the AC isn't functioning properly.
Reduce heat: Try closing the blinds and curtains to reduce the heat coming into the room so the AC won't have to work hard in doing that.
Steady temperature: Avoid setting a very low temperature, as lesser the difference between outdoor and indoor levels, lower will be the power consumed by the AC.
Use fans smartly: If the room is too warm, switch on the fan and open all doors and windows to let the heat out. Later, close them and put on the AC. You can also use the fan to help circulate the cool air from the AC.

Use your devices efficiently and cut down on those bills. Happy saving!
