In a suspected road rage incident, a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus driver was assaulted by an unidentified youth near Muttikkulangara in Palakkad district, on Thursday.

The driver, Aboobacker, was left with injuries on his face.

The incident happened at about 2 pm, in an inter-city bus plying between Palakkad and Kozhikode. As per eyewitness accounts, passengers in an SUV intercepted the KSRTC bus and a group of young men tried to enter the bus through the door next to the driver's seat. A video shot by a bus passenger shows one of the men entering the bus and violently smashing the driver's face, leaving him with a bloodied nose, even as the bus conductor feebly tries to stop him.

According to Aboobacker, the attacker said that the bus had brushed against the SUV he was travelling in. The driver claimed that the bus did not hit the SUV. He said he had only slowed down the bus after a tipper sped past the vehicle and was not aware of any collision with the SUV. He also said that the attacker was drunk. Aboobacker is admitted in a taluk hospital in Mannarkad.

An official at the Hemambika Nagar Police Station told DH that three men detained in connection with the incident were being interrogated. Preliminary reports said the attacker was part of a group returning after attending a wedding.
