In a shocking incident, a woman was molested and assaulted on a running local train in Mumbai on Thursday night.

The incident took place around 11 pm on board a local train, which was on its way from Kalyan to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on the Central Railway network.

The victim and the accused, Rafique Chinkan Ali Khan (35), were travelling in the part of a coach reserved for handicapped passengers and cancer patients.

The accused is a taxi driver and a resident of Byculla in south Mumbai.

A video of the incident, apparently shot by a co-passenger (a handicapped person), on his smartphone, went viral on Friday morning.

The video shows the man beating the woman mercilessly and at one stage the woman is also seen going near the footboard to jump out.

"The accused has been arrested and an investigation is in progress," said Senior Police Inspector Nitin Bobde of Dadar railway police station.

The accused has been booked under 307, 354, 323 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.

Initial investigation revealed that the accused had borrowed money from the victim and refused to return it.

They boarded the train at Dombivli station on Thursday evening. When she again asked for money, his temper flared up and he started assaulting her.

Since the handicap section is partitioned from the ladies coach, the women from there screamed and sought help.

Khan dragged the victim by her hair and attempted to strangulate her. He molested her and tore off her clothes.

At one stage, he even fell off, but got up again.

The GRP was alerted and when the train reached Dadar, police rushed in and took him into custody.

The accused and victim were known to each and the woman used to lend often lend money to Khan.
