Poll officials seize goods worth Rs 8 cr

The election surveillance and flying squads have seized goods worth Rs 8.18 crore and the authorities have attended to 108 complaints of violation of model code of conduct (MCC) in the district, which has 11 Assembly segments.

Deputy Commissioner K B Sivakumar, also the district election officer, at a press conference here on Thursday, said the authorities had formed 210 teams to ensure compliance with the model code of conduct. As many as 150 surveillance teams, including 49 checkposts, 93 flying squads and seven excise checkposts are in place in the district.

Ever since the election code came into force, the authorities have seized 1,038 gram of gold jewellery, Rs 7.48 lakh in cash, liquor worth Rs 2.33 lakh, two borewell lorries, one mike set and eight vehicles. The election officials have registered a total of 108 cases. The officials raided 386 places and took 69 persons into custody.

Seven companies of paramilitary forces reached the district on Thursday. While four companies have been deployed in the city, three units are on duty in the rural areas of the district.
