Dance Workshop

Natya Vidushi Jaya from the Department of Performing Arts conducted the workshop for over 100 students across the State in the age group of eight to 50.

The chief guest of the valedictory function on the final day of the workshop was S Kamat, Dean, Department of Performing Arts, Bangalore University. The workshop began formally with  invocatory items like the Melaprapthi, Alaripu, Pushpanjali and Ganesha Vandana.

It was conducted according to a Sanskrit work called Abhinaya Darpana, which is a treatise on Lakshana aspect of dance. This was written by Nandikeshwara in the third century. It deals with Angikabhinaya, which is of three kinds namely, Anga, Upanga and Pratyanga. There is a description about the shiro bheda, dhrushti bheda, greeva bheda, hastha bheda and pada bheda in Abhinaya Darpana.

In this workshop, emphasis was given to Hasthabhinaya or hand gestures, used to convey a meaning. Many dance enthusiast and gurus alike participated in the workshop.

The participants gave a wonderful demonstration of the Hastaviniyogas at the end of this spectacular three-day workshop.
