Girl expelled for wearing scarf

Last Updated 05 May 2010, 17:13 IST

Even as the government ordered an inquiry into the episode, activists of the Students Federation of India as well as the Social Democratic Party of India took out demonstrations to the school on Wednesday protesting against the incident.

At the centre of the controversy are the Believer’s Church English Medium School at Gurupuram which follows the Central Board of Secondary Education curriculum and T N Nabala, a student who passed out from Class IX. Nabala’s father Naseer Musaliar who is also the Imam of the local madrassa, says his daughter had been wearing the headscarf since she was in kindergarten. However, after the school’s management changed hands to the Believer’s Church recently, his daughter was warned not to wear the headscarf.

District Collector P Venugopal said he is awaiting a report from the Revenue Divisional Officer, who was asked to inquire into the incident.

The TC issued by the school on April 26 does mention the reason for the transfer as “maftha is not allowed in this school”.

Education Minister M A Baby said the matter would be referred to the Centre as the school is affiliated to the CBSE.
