The experts' predictions about the arrival of the monsoon over the sub-continent went awry last year due to the unexpected development of a severe storm over the Arabian Sea which resulted in the rain clouds veering away from the Peninsula towards the Gulf of Oman.

This year, it is the turn of the Bay of Bengal to by-pass the prognostication of the weather experts, when the cyclonic disturbance Aila delayed the onset of the South-West monsoon over the southern parts of the country by over a week.
