Nominations yet to be filed for Council poll

No nomination papers have been filed for polls to fill the seven vacancies in the Legislative Council, to be elected by members of the Lower House Legislative Assembly Secretary S B Patil, who is also the returning officer for the polls, told reporters that May 31 is the last date to file nominations with members of the Legislative Assembly forming the electoral college in the biennial polls to the Upper House.

The BJP, with a strength of 116 legislators, can send four members to the Council. The party is likely to finalise its candidates on May 28. As many as 29 first preference votes are required elect each candidate. The Congress can send two candidates to the Upper House. The JD(S), with 27 members in the Assembly, can send one candidate but only with the support of the Congress.
