Bhimsen Joshi to get Hangal Award

Foundation President Manoj Hangal told mediapersons here on Saturday that Padmavibhushan Dr Gangubai Hangal Memorial National Award (individual) would be given to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, while the award for music institutions would be presented to Gayan Samaj Deval Club, Kolhapur and Veereshwar Punyashram, Gadag. Individual award includes Rs 50,000 cash and a citation, while the award for music institutions includes Rs 25,000 cash and citation. These awards would be presented in October. Every year, these awards would be given to reputed musicians, dancers, and music institutions, he said.

Swara Shradhanjali programmes will be held at about 50 places including Shimoga, Bhadravati, Varanasi and Mumbai to pay tribute to late Gangubai Hangal, on the occasion of her first death anniversary on July 21. In Hubli-Dharwad, music programmes and puja will be held, and Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain will inaugurate the classical music school at Shukrawarpet in Dharwad at 10 am on July 21, Manoj Hangal said.
