The 2001 movie topped a poll run by the DVD renting firm LoveFilm as fans found the plotline difficult to understand, reported Contactmusic.

The film, which was directed by Cameron Crowe, told a surreal tale of a wealthy publishing heir, played by Cruise, who, after a car accident leaves him horribly disfigured, begins to suffer from a series of strange hallucinations.

"It's clear dreaming is the biggest cause of confusion for viewers. Switching from reality to dream sequences pulls the wool over our eyes," said Helen Cowley of LoveFilm.
David Lynch's 'Mulholland Drive' came in second place while 'Donnie Darko', which was directed by Richard Kelly, was third.

Other films in the top 10 included 'The Matrix Revolutions', 'Memento', 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' and 'A Clockwork Orange'.
