The victim, Mahadevi (28), who was from Matadakoppalu village in Periyapatna taluk, was married to Mahadev six years ago. Police said that her mother-in-law Thayamma had been harassing her since marriage and Mahadevi had complained to her father Subbagowda about it.
Distressed with the continued harassment, Mahadevi jumped into the canal in Uddur along with her two children –– Madesh (5) and Yogesh (3).
Thayamma, her husband Kengegowda and son Manju are absconding.
Hunsur rural police have registered a case and are investigating.
