'Coconut growers facing problems'

Last Updated 16 June 2009, 18:52 IST

Samiti District Secretary Niranjan Murthy in a press release informed that untimely rainfall and mite disease has made life difficult for coconut cultivators of the region.
Owing to pressure from Raitha Sangha, coconut is being purchased from these growers but the criteria adopted while purchasing the coconut is meting out injustice at the growers.
Due to this, the growers are compelled to sell the produce at less price.
While purchasing the coconut, the size of the coconut is looked at.
Due to scarcity of rainfall and mite disease, the size of coconuts grown here have reduced considerably and it is impossible to meet the size prescribed by the purchasing organisation.
He said that even small size coconuts can be of good quality and have good oil content and hence the size must not be the criterion while purchasing coconut.
