'Drunk' girl driver leaves 2 dead

An eyewitness who saw the accident said two girls alighted from their Honda Accord after hitting the victims who were on a motorcycle and fled from the spot in their friend’s car which was being driven just ahead of them. The whole night police tried to nab the occupants of the car but could not do so.

The incident blew into a controversy when it emerged that the car belonged to a serving Army Colonel. On Thursday morning, one of the girls, Amanat Brar, daughter of a service Colonel in the Army dramatically turned herself in at the police station here.

Sources said the girl’s family claimed before the police that on Tuesday night the car was being driven by the driver of Colonel B S Brar, father of the girl.

The victim Sukhvinder Singh’s family was inconsolable. His father said, “My son had gone to fetch medicines for my wife who is ill when he was hit by the car. We demand severe punishment to those responsible for the my son’s death.”

The eyewitness, Sarabjit Singh, claimed that the Honda Accord was being driven at a high speed. The two girl occupants of the car had to rupture air bags before they could get out of the car and escape in a Swift car.
