Meanwhile, farmers in Ferozabad also took to the streets protesting acquisition of their land for a development project. The government, bowing to the farmers’ demands, had earlier hiked the compensation for their land from Rs 449 per square metre to Rs 570 per square metre and claimed that an agreement had been reached.

However, the farmers rejected the hike and demanded that they be paid compensation at Noida rates, which is over Rs 800 per square metre. The government had also hiked the ex-gratia relief to the next of the kins of those killed in the police-farmer clashes on Saturday from Rs five lakh each to Rs 10 lakh.

“We will continue our agitation... the new rate is not acceptable to us,” declared Manavendra Singh, a leader of the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti.
