Rare snakes stolen from UP zoo

The matter came to light on Monday when an employee of the zoo found the glass of one of the cages, where the snakes were kept, removed. The cage had altogether six two- headed snakes.

The authorities later found one of the snakes near the zoo but the remaining five could not be found. “Prima facie it appears that someone has stolen the snakes,” zoo sources said here.

The snakes are considered rare and were found in Rajasthan, zoo officials said. The snakes were seized from a smuggler a few years ago. The snakes could fetch Rs 1.5 lakh a piece in the international market, they pointed out.
Senior officials of the zoo tried to hush up the matter and have not yet lodged any report with the police.
