The lucky bunch of freshers at Mount Carmel University recently did just that, when the seniors ‘officially’ got an opportunity to welcome them in their own way.

This party is a sort of a tradition, which is held at the beginning of the academic year, where the girls are branded as ‘Carmelites’.

“The tradition of throwing a party for the juniors has been going on for many years now.

From this day on, they are all officially branded as ‘Carmelites’, there is no
turning back,” laughs Surabhi, president of the students’ union.

“This is one party where there are no rules and restrictions. The freshers get to know each other and simply enjoy themselves,” she adds. Of course, they were constantly monitored by the teachers who made sure that things were under control.

Since the theme was ‘Red Carpet’, the girls were all dolled up in short skirts, dresses, halter-neck tops, high heels and sported funky hairdos. The style quotient was at its maximum, and when the deejays started spinning music, there was not a single girl who wasn’t on the dance floor.

Girls formed mini circles and made their own moves and steps. Some seniors also came on the dance floor to keep the tempo going.

“To be a Carmelite means having loads of energy and enthusiasm and through this party, we not only get to know each other better but also get to break the ice with our seniors,” says Sanjana, a first year student.

The highlight of the party, however was the ‘Freshie Queen 2010’ competition. Every year, a competition is held to select Miss Freshie Queen, who represents the ‘true Carmelite spirit’.

Says Surabhi, “The girl with the right attitude, energy and a good overall personality is chosen as Miss Freshie Queen. It’s a fun competition and surely boosts the morale of the juniors.”

Roshni, another first year student, says the competition is a fun aspect of the party, “All my friends and I are looking forward to the competition and we are sure only the
deserving girl will win,” she adds.

So after a fun-filled afternoon of dance, refreshments and a grilling competition, Susianne was titled ‘Miss Freshie Queen 2010’.
