'Curriculum should be literature centric'

Inaugurating the meet, Deputy Commissioner Hemalatha said that literature helps in the overall development of children. “Language should be allowed to grow. Interest in literature nurture the growth of a language,” she said announcing that measures will be taken to organise district-level children’s literary meet from next year, on the model of Prathibha Karanji competitions.  Sandhya Pai, a II PU student of Bhuvanendra College Karkala, who presided over the meet, said that the academic curriculum should be literature centric.
“Children should be made to develop interest on literature right from childhood. This will reduce the negative impact of television on their minds,” she added.

She said that society, teachers and parents should give children the freedom to pursue their interests.

The meet is organised for the primary, high school and PU students of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kasargod districts. DK  district Kannada Sahitya Parishath President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura,  DDPI Mahidas, Kannada and Culture Department Assistant Director R S Dalavayi and others were present.
