Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, he said Department of Social Weflare has so far, distributed only 10 kg rice to each member who has been ostracised. Apart from this no steps has been taken to pay any compensation to the victims.

As per law, gruel centres should be opened at the villages where atrocities on dalits have been reported. Moreover, they should be given job opportunities and steps should be taken to construct houses for the affected and also distribute land for landless.

But, the district administration seems to be in deep slumber and not taken any steps in this regard, he claimed.

He recalled the assurances given by Dr B R Ambedkar Development Board Manager who visited the village and promised cows, sheep for the ostracised dalits. However, these are only temporary measures and each family should be distributed five acre of land. Houses should be constructed for them and also open fair price shops.

The social outcast has also been reported at Shindanapura, Hasagooli, Bommanahalli, Kandegala, Hongalli, Mandrahalli in Gundlupet taluk. What are Police and District administration doing, he questioned.

The respective Deputy Commissioners and Superintendent of Police should be held responsible if such incidences of dalit atrocities are reported. The BSP activists will stage an intensified protest if legal action is not taken against the accused, he warned.

District president Arakalwadi Nagendra, District General Secretary B M Krishnamurthy, District convener Nagaraja Uppar and others were present.

Flaying the state government for failing to protect the dalits, backward classes and minorities, he also demanded Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to convene a state-level meeting of SC and ST Hitarakshana Samiti immediately. If the CM fails, the party would lay siege residence of the chief minister and lock the premises, he warned.

 Take action

Janata Dal (Secular)  leader and former minister M Shivanna has charged the district administration and police of having failed to check atrocities on dalits at Ankahalli village. He has urged suitable compensation for the victims.

Talking to reporters after visiting the village on Friday, he said Department of Social Welfare made little effors to bring harmony between the communities and has completed formality by distributing some ration to the victims, he alleged. Shivanna held talks with the upper caste leaders and the victims of ostracisation and appealed for peaceful co-existence. He urged action against accused.
