Since the reward is on per-patient basis, it will be a substantial earning for the local people.  The move is expected to mitigate the situation in the district, which, in recent times, has been ravaged by water-borne diseases. The state government is anxious not to let the situation spiral out of control.

“In the interior areas of the district, affected villagers face difficulties in reaching hospital because of their conditions, and fellow villagers usually hesitate to carry them for treatment. Hope the incentive will work and more and more cholera and diarrhoea patients will be enrolled into the hospitals,” a health department spokesperson said here on Sunday.

The department has also decided to offer new dhotis, sarees and soap to all the hospitalised patients in the district.
