Orissa Cong MP escapes bid on life by former aide

Hemanand Biswal, an MP from Orissa’s Sundargarh Lok Sabha constituency, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that his former aide Prabhat Kumar Sharma tried to shoot him at his 7, Kamaraj Lane residence in New Delhi at around 4 am on Thursday.

Biswal, a former chief minister of Orissa, alleged that Sharma had been looking after renovation of the building, but had been found involved in financial irregularities and asked to leave some months ago.

The MP alleged that he was going to the washroom when he noticed Sharma opening one of his briefcases. “I encountered him and asked him what he was doing and caught him by his neck. I was taking him to another room when I fell on a sofa. Then he pulled out a pistol and put it on my head. I caught him by his hand,” Biswal told reporters.

Biswal alleged that Sharma then tried to open fire at him but the weapon did not work. He pulled out another pistol but, by then, he became scared that he would be caught. He immediately fled from the house.

A police official said that Biswal called up the Control Room at 4:20 am and informed them about the incident. “We are investigating the case,” the official said.
