TN students to get egg for noon meal

Last Updated 17 September 2010, 17:26 IST

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Friday issued an order under which the state will provide boiled eggs to all the children in their daily noon meal on all five working days of the week. This will directly benefit about 58 lakh schoolchildren in the state covered under the noon-meal scheme.

The order takes effect from Friday and may be enforced from Monday.
Introduced in 1982 by the late chief minister M G Ramachandran, the Puratchi Thalaivar MGR Nutritious Noon-Meal Programme for schoolkids had won accolades even from the World Bank for not only fighting children’s malnutrition but also improving their enrolment rates in schools. The nutritional content of the noon meals, given free to preschool and schoolchildren, has been progressively stepped up.
