Ijaz does a U-turn; ECB reacts angrily

Butt said he was just referring to the information received from bookies relating to the one-dayer between England and Pakistan at the Oval on Friday.

“I have never said this. If you listen to the full tape of the NDTV interview, the bookies are saying this. I am not saying this,” Butt told BBC Radio Five Live.

The Pakistan Cricket Board chief said the five-match ODI series should continue despite all the latest controversy which erupted after England lost their third ODI at the Oval.

A joint statement from the ECB and the England team confirmed the tour would continue with Monday's match and the final one-day international in Southampton on Wednesday.

But it called Butt's reported comments "wholly irresponsible and completely without foundation.

"Both the ECB and Team England view the comments made by Mr Butt as defamatory and not based in fact."

Butt’s remarks didn’t go down well with the English cricketers and an infuriated England skipper Andrew Strauss threatened Butt with legal action.
