Points of view on Hazare protest and Lokpal bill

Last Updated 27 August 2011, 17:21 IST

We will amend government bill, not withdraw it. The Congress does not have the absolute majority required to pass the bill. Following discussion, the bill would be referred to a standing committee. On the lines of the Lokayukta, the central government could only recommend to the state governments, who would then have to enact the bill, by passing appropriate legislation.

-Pranab Mukherjee, Finance minister

The real question before us as representatives of the people of India is whether we are prepared to take the battle against corruption head on? To eradicate corruption demands a far deeper engagement and sustained commitment from each one of us.

-Rahul Gandhi, Cong general secretary

We support Rahul Gandhi’s suggestion that the Lokpal be made a constitutional body, but it must be done forthwith. It is completely possible for Parliament to pass a constitutional amendment in 24 hours. It has been done before.

-Shanti Bhushan & Prashant Bhushan, Hazare associates

The Lokpal bill must be constitutionally compatible. Conduct of MPs within the House can only be subject to the provisions of Article 105.

-Arun Jaitley, BJP leader

The situation has become so serious that a member of Parliament was forced to de-board a train by other passengers... He had to take the next train.

-Sharad Yadav, president, Janata Dal (United).
