Bypoll Election Results 2024 | Key takeaways

We take a look at are some of the key takeaways from the bypoll election results in 2 Lok Sabha seats (Wayanad in Kerala and Nanded in Maharashtra) and 46 assembly seats across 13 states.

Assembly bypolls were held to 48 seats in 14 states and Lok Sabha bypolls were held in Wayanad and Nanded, both held by the Congress. 

BJP won 20 seats, improving its tally from 12, while Congress fell from 13 to seven. Trinamool Congress won all six seats in Bengal, wresting one from BJP, while AAP won three out of four seats in Punjab after taking two seats from Congress.

Congress lost sitting seats in Assam (1), Gujarat (1), Meghalaya (1), Punjab (2), and Rajasthan (3). BJP lost their one each sitting seat in Karnataka and West Bengal.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the bypoll election results:

- Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi registered a thumping victory from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala. Priyanka won by a margin of more than 4 lakh votes against her nearest competitor Sathyan Mokeri, belonging of the Communist Party of India.

- In Maharashtra's Nanded, the other Lok Sabha seat where bypoll elections were held, BJP's Dr Santukrao Marotrao Hambarde all but secured victory with a steady lead of more than 45,000 votes against Chavan Ravindra Vasantrao of the Congress at the time of writing.

- Despite a strong wave of anti-establishment against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) post the R G Kar rape and murder incident in Kolkata, the Mamata Banerjee-led party remained unscathed as they completed a clean sweep in West Bengal, clinching all 6 seats in the state assembly bypolls - namely Sitai, Madarihat, Haroa, Naihati, Medinipur, and Taldangra. However, it remains to be whether the TMC can manage to maintain the momentum of the bypoll victories up until the 2026 assembly elections.

- In Uttar Pradesh (UP), where the BJP-led NDA faced a massive jolt at the Lok Sabha Elections earlier this year, the saffron party has secured victories in 3 seats and is leading in 3 more, whereas the Samajwadi Party (SP) won in 2 seats. The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) registered win in the reamining seat.

- As far as Karnataka is concerned, the Congress completed a clean sweep, winning all the 3 assembly seats - Channapatna, Shiggaon, and Sandur Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil lost to Congress' C P Yogeeshwara in Channapatna by a margin of 25,413 votes. This defeat marked 3 election losses on the trot for Nikhil Kumaraswamy. In Sandur, Congress' E Annapoorna won by a margin of 9,649 votes against BJP's Bangara Hanumantha. BJP candidate Bharath Bommai lost by a margin of 13,448 votes to Congress' Pathan Yasir Ahmed Khan in Shiggaon.

- Kerala's Palakkad assembly constituency witnessed a tight contest, but Congress' Rahul Mamkootathil registered victory by a margin of 18,840 votes against BJP's C Krishnakumar in the end. In Chelakkara, LDF candidate U R Pradeep clinched victory by a margin of 12,201 votes against nearest rival Ramya Haridas of the Congress. After today's results, BJP's hopes of entering the Kerala Legislative Assembly still remains a distant dream.

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark.
