Dhruva Sarja-starrer 'Pogaru' a disaster at the Tamil Nadu box office

'Pogaru' was not promoted too well in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil dubbed version of actor Druva Sarja's latest movie Pogaru has proved to be a 'disaster' at the Tamil Nadu box office despite its 'massy' storyline. A trade analyst told DH that the collections are 'too low to be tracked'.

"See, Pogaru is a disaster here. In fact, the collections are so low that we aren't even tracking them," he added.

The film failed to make an impact in Tamil Nadu due to the lacklustre promotions and virtually non-existent hype.

"It was not promoted well and most people did not know about it at all," tracker Ramesh Bala told DH.

The Yash-starrer KGF, which hit the screens in 2018, had done well at the Tamil Nadu box office despite clashing with the Kollywood biggies Maari 2 and Adanga Maru. The phenomenal response to the actioner had opened new avenues for Sandalwood. The Pogaru debacle proves that not every Kannada movie is a KGF.

The Nanda Kishore-directed movie features Dhruva Sarja in the role of a rogue and highlights his bad attitude towards women. It ruffled a few feathers with its 'sexist' plot and the controversial Karabuu song.

Pogaru stars Rashmika Mandanna, who will soon be seen opposite Karthi in the Tamil movie Sulthan , and marks her first collaboration with the 'Action Prince'. This was an important release for her as it had the potential to open new avenues for her in Tamil Nadu.

Pogaru has, meanwhile, set the box office on fire in Karnataka. The film reportedly grossed nearly Rs 35 crore in the opening week, exceeding expectations. The general perception is that it may establish him as a bonafide star. The response to Pogaru is likely to help Sandalwood find its mojo after the Covid-19 pandemic. This is good news for films such as Roberrt and Vikrant Rona that are slated to release in the near future.
