Mollywood star Mammootty’s latest movie One, which hit the screens on Friday (March 26), has opened to a good response at the Kerala box office despite Covid-`19 restrictions. It has reportedly collected around Rs 1.20 crore, proving that the veteran is still the undisputed ‘Megastar’ of Malayalam cinema.

The biggie has, however, failed to beat the star’s previous release The Priest, which raked in around Rs 2 crore. The general perception is this not too surprising as The Priest had piqued the curiosity of fans due to the fact that it marked the Big B hero’s first collaboration with Manju Warrier.

One has received rave reviews with most critics praising the gripping storyline and Mammootty’s grand screen presence. The political drama has garnered a fair deal of attention as it releases at a time when the elections are around the corner, which seems to have worked in its favour. The word of mouth is positive, which should help it stay strong in the long run

It is, however, likely to face competition from Tovino’s Kala and the Hollywood biggie Godzilla vs Kong.

One has been directed by Santosh Vishwanath and features Mammootty in the role of a powerful political leader. Its highlights the need for the Chief Minister to work for the state while rising above party lines. The cast includes Gayatri Arun, Murali Gopy, Siddique and Jagadish.

The film comes at a time when the Malayalam film industry is struggling to regain its mojo after the Covid-19 lockdown. Most of the movies released under the ‘new normal’, barring Master and The Priest, have done well at the box office. It remains to be seen whether One helps Mollywood return to the ‘good old days’.

Mammootty, meanwhile, is going through a busy phase on the work front. He will next be seen in Bheeshma Parvam, which reunites him with Big B director Amal Neerad.
