Rajni’s baby was born prematurely and with a critically less weight of about 450 grams which doctors say qualified to be India’s smallest baby at this phenomenally less weight.
Today the baby was discharged from the Neonatal ICU at Fortis Hospital in Mohali near
Chandigarh. The baby survived all odds and weighed 1.4 kg on Thursday. The parent’s cannot stop thanking God.
The child was born after three failed pregnancies. Dr Sunil K Agrawal, the Consultant and Head, Neonatology at the hospital said there is no reported survival of a baby of this weight in India. The earlier record, based on the various reports published in this regard in medical journals, was of a baby weighing 495 grams from Pune in October 2010, he said.
He said most newborn specialists consider babies with weight less than 500 grams to have bleak chances of survival. “It’s too early to know how she will do when she grows up. Since she did not have any major complications, we are hopeful for a normal development. She is a miracle child”, he said.
Rajni was fourth time lucky. She underwent the trauma of three intra uterine deaths at seven months of pregnancy.
The doctor added that the baby required respiratory support (ventilation) for nearly 15 days before she could breathe on her own. “Thereafter, we had to put her on artificial oxygen for another 12-days, apart from providing intravenous nutrition for the first two weeks, till she became stable,” he said. She was able to start drinking from spoon only after about 10 weeks of birth.
