<p>Mumbai<strong>:</strong> Journalist and political analyst Neeta Kolhatkar has written about the life and struggles of the political prisoners in India. The prisoners include Dr Binayak Sen, paediatrician, public health specialist and social activist, and Prof Anand Teltumbde, eminent scholar, Dalit activist and management teacher. </p><p>During the course of extensive research, Kolhatkar spoke to political prisoners and their family members. </p><p>"The first night in jail is reputed to be the hardest. After that, you learn how to survive, though many prisoners carry lifelong scars,” said Kolhatkar, a Mumbai-based independent journalist. </p> .<p>In the book, she covered 11 political prisoners </p><p>1. Nilofer Malik and Sameer Khan, the daughter and late son-in-law of politician and NCP leader Nawab Malik; </p><p>2. Koel Sen, daughter of Prof Shoma Sen </p><p>3. Prashant Rahi, journalist and his daughter Shikha Rahi </p><p>4. Sanjay Raut, the Rajya Sabha member of Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), </p><p>5. Kishorchandra Wangkhem, journalist from Manipur </p><p>6. Prof Anand Teltumbde, human rights activist and management professor at the Goa Institute of Management </p><p>7. P Hemalatha, wife of Pendyala Varavara Rao, the poet-activist. </p> .<p>The compilation -- ‘<em>The Feared</em>’ -- has been published by Yoda Press along with Simon and Schuster India.</p><p>Kolhatkar conducted interviews of eleven political prisoners, and in some cases, their loved ones, in which she highlights the interviewees’ everyday lives within the walls of multiple prisons across India. </p> .<p>In doing so, she calls urgent attention to the grave injustices meted out to the thousands of undertrials dissent in the political life of India today.</p><p>During long discussions, sometimes taking place over multiple meetings, Kolhatkar unearthed personal anecdotes from the time her interviewees were incarcerated, bringing into focus the human face of prison inmates, while also detailing the wretched conditions relating to space, hygiene, medical attention, and food that they experienced. </p><p>Apart from being an urgent call to action for prison reforms, 'The Feared' is thus also an account of hope and strength, narrating unique stories of survival and solidarity, and the unexpected bonds and relationships formed in prison.</p>
